AW Crewing Services is committed to the development of Trainee Officer Cadets by providing them with the skills and knowledge necessary to enhance their careers. With its own Fleet of commercial merchant vessels, AW Crewing Services understands the training and competencies required to maintain the safe and efficient operation of hi-tech modern vessels. These factors place AW Crewing Services as a leading industry training provider.

Eligibility

You can apply for sponsorship if you are a EU citizen/passport holder, ordinarily resident in the UK for more than 12 months.

Entry Requirements

Officer training involves a three-year course leading to a first Certificate of Competency. Entry requirements are either a Foundation Degree (Professional Diploma in Scotland), or an HNC/HND qualification. Requirements for these qualifications are as follows:

  • FD/SPD: At least 48 UCAS points in A-levels or Scottish Highers’, plus 4 GCSE at Grade B or higher in English, Mathematics and Physics/Combined Science.
  • HNC/HND: GCSEs (A-B) or Scottish Standard Grades (levels 1-3) in English, Mathematics and a Science-based subject plus at least one other discipline.

Medical Fitness Requirements

Before an offer of sponsorship is made, each candidiate will be required to undertake the Merchant Navy medical examination known as an ENG1.

For details of the examination, contact the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA). If you are considering obtaining an ENG1 before applying, the MCA can also direct you toward approved Doctors.

Trainee Rating Programmes

Through its association with Foreland Shipping Limited, AW Crewing Services Limited is one of the few members of the UK Merchant Navy committed to providing career opportunities for those wishing to train as Merchant Navy Ratings. This training option is particularly suited to those with an interest in a career at sea but who do not meet the academic entry requirements for Trainee Officer Programmes.

Training programmes leading to Level 2 Award and/or Level 2 Certificate in Marine Vessel Operations for Deck Ratings or Marine Engineering Operations for Engine room ratings. As with Trainee Officer programmes, training involves both college and sea phases.
